How to compress an audio file
- Open an audio or video file, or drop it on the page.
- Choose Smallest, Balanced or Good quality.
- Select Save, then compare the sizes before and after.
Three levels, in plain words
Smallest uses 64 kbps in mono, which is fine for speech, voice memos and lectures. Balanced uses 96 kbps in stereo. Good quality uses 128 kbps in stereo, a reasonable choice for music you want to keep listening to.
When compressing does not help
A file that is already at a low bitrate can come out larger, and re-encoding always loses a little more detail. If that happens the tool says so, and you can keep your original.
Questions about Compress audio
Is my file uploaded?
No. The audio is decoded and encoded in your browser, so it stays on your device, however private it is.
How much smaller will it get?
It depends on the original. A WAV file usually shrinks by around 90%. An MP3 at 320 kbps saved at 96 kbps becomes about 70% smaller.
Is there a size limit?
There is no limit set by us. Very long files need enough free memory on your device, because the whole recording is held in the tab while it is processed.
Will it sound worse?
A little, and more at lower levels. Speech holds up well at Smallest. For music, use Good quality.
